Another milestone that reminds me my baby is growing way too quickly! We decided to wait until 6 months to start Coby on solids-- it was recommended by our doctor and I really wanted to make sure that he was ready. Generally speaking you can start a baby on solids around 4-6 months, but we decided to wait a little.
I decided that since I am home the majority of the time, I could at least try to make some food. I did it a few weeks before we were ready to start him on foods--thinking that way I'm ahead of things. What momma doesn't like to be ahead, right?
I knew we would start him on avocado first, but that didn't need any preparation. So I decided to start making sweet potatoes, peas, and pears.
Sweet Potatoes: Washed, baked in the oven, scooped the insides out and then blended.
Peas {I bought frozen sweet peas}: I just cooked on the stove and then blended.
Pears: Washed, peeled, diced, and steamed on the stove over boiling water and then blended.
This was all SUPER easy and I made a lot of the sweet potatoes and peas, not quite as much of the pears. I did all of this during Coby's 2 hour afternoon nap!
It was easier than I expected and it's SO much cheaper. I can't believe the price of baby food--good gravy! I'm sure I'll buy some food due to the convenience and they have TONS of combinations that I probably wouldn't be able to make as easily, but it definitely helps to save some moolah if I can make as much as possible. Only downside? My kitchen was a disaster...I'm a messy cook! haha :)

My friend, Paula, turned me on to this website and it's amazing!! It gives great food suggestions for each stage, tells you a good way to prepare, freeze, and thaw, along with lots of other tips. It's an incredible resource that I've used LOTS. Check it out :)
Back to Coby's first solids!
I'm glad we waited till 6 months because Coby was so ready for solids when we started. He had been eyeing food for a few weeks, watching our every move as we ate and his obsession with cups is unreal. I put the spoon in his mouth ONCE & he immediately caught on. I thought it would take him a little longer to get the hang out of it, but he proved me wrong {this happens often, see below for more proof!}
We first started with avocado:
Although he caught on quick to the idea of the spoon...he wasn't a fan of the avocado. He didn't seem to hate it or love it. I added water to it to help make it a little more smooth, but that didn't seem to help. He mostly looked at Nate & I like "what am I supposed to do with this? This is the kind of stuff you eat? I'll stick with my breastmilk" haha.
Next we moved to sweet potatoes, and this was a home run. Cobes was ALL about the sweet taters. To be honest, if I had to choose which to eat plain, I would pick sweet potatoes too!
He surprised me with how much of the food he ate. With the avocado, he ate barely a few bites...but the sweet potatoes was another story. He eats an entire 4 oz without flinching!
After sweet potatoes we did peas.
Not quite as thrilled about peas, but after 2 or 3 times he started to enjoy them!
The most recent food we have tried is pears. I thought "He's going to LOVE pears and he'll probably hate every other vegetable because the pears will be so sweet".
Can we say dramatic much??
hahaha--I could look at these pictures all day every day!
This kid loves to prove us wrong. He hates pears. Hates them. He's only had them once so far, so we will keep trying!
I'm having a blast with giving him solids. It's so much fun and I know he really enjoys it {minus the pears!}. I know this is just the beginning of all the crazy fun that will be had!
Coby Drew-- I LOVE living this life with you :)
xox,
Naomi
