Since moving to Nashville, I have tried to focus on what my passions are and how I can go about using my talents to pursue those passions. I have always loved animals- when I was little I always said I wanted to be a vet or a dolphin trainer- today, I would still love to do both of those! However, with my life and the way it has progressed...neither of those are on my top priority list.
I have decided that I need to be involved with animals in some way.
This past January, I started to volunteer at a puppy & kitten adoption center here in Nashville, TN called "Love At First Sight".
Woah...One of the best decisions I have ever made.
I loved volunteering there and was SO excited when they offered me a job. Right now, I'm working there full-time and I could NOT be happier. Getting paid to love on puppies & kittens {mostly puppies} daily and get paid for it??? Sign me up!
Love At First Sight works a little differently than most adoption centers or humane societies. We are owned by Murphy Road Animal Hospital. They own us, run us, & fund us. Therefore, the puppies and kittens we take in are taken care of in a different way. When they come in, every puppy & kitten gets an entrance exam to make sure they are healthy. Most of the time, they will have some type of worm that we can just de-worm with medication. As long as the puppies or kittens are generally healthy and don't have any serious disease or contagious situation, they are accepted into our program. Then they get their first round of shots & are ready to be adopted.
Once a puppy or kitten is adopted from us, the adopters sign an agreement that they will come back to Murphy Road Animal Hospital to get the rest of the puppy/kitten shots and then the spay/neuter around 4-6 months of age. There is no adoption fee with us, you just pay for the healthcare :)
This is a little different from most humane societies in that:
1. Most spay/neuter the animal right away. They do this mainly to MAKE SURE that these animals coming in are going to be spay/neutered (most places don't have a vet clinic like we do that can ensure this down the road). Waiting for an animal to mature a little more is best, but I understand why most others do it as soon as they get the animal. The crucial part is that the spay/neuter is DONE.
2. Most places will take any age of pets, where Love At First Sight only takes puppies & kittens (due to size and the way we work with our vet office) from 6-12 weeks of age. {Once they get older, NO we do NOT put the animal down...we love it & take care of it until it gets adopted...& they always get adopted eventually}
I LOVE that my job consists of taking little fur babies & finding them great homes. I realize that not everyone is a pet person (my husband included, actually)...
...but PUPPIES are a different story, am I right??? I'm not saying that my job is some kind of "world changing" action, but we are helping people...& sweet puppies who probably would not have lived if we didn't take them in. I have grown to love the idea of adopting a dog (coming from a girl who HAD to find the right breeder for my oh-so-special Maltipoo) :) Adoption centers make a positive impact on this world...that's a fact.
